How Much Does a Treedepth Modulator Help to Obtain Polynomial Kernels Beyond Sparse Graphs?

چکیده
In the last years, kernelization with structural parameters has been an active area of research within the field of parameterized complexity. As a relevant example, Gajarskỳ et al. [ESA 2013] proved that every graph problem satisfying a property called finite integer index admits a linear kernel on graphs of bounded expansion and an almost linear kernel on nowhere dense graphs, parameterized by the size of a c-treedepth modulator, which is a vertex set whose removal results in a graph of treedepth at most c, where c ≥ 1 is a fixed integer. The authors left as further research to investigate this parameter on general graphs, and in particular to find problems that, while admitting polynomial kernels on sparse graphs, behave differently on general graphs. In this article we answer this question by finding two very natural such problems: we prove that Vertex Cover admits a polynomial kernel on general graphs for any integer c ≥ 1, and that Dominating Set does not for any integer c ≥ 2 even on degenerate graphs, unless NP ⊆ coNP/poly. For the positive result, we build on the techniques of Jansen and Bodlaender [STACS 2011], and for the negative result we use a polynomial parameter transformation for c ≥ 3 and an or-cross-composition for c = 2. As existing results imply that Dominating Set admits a polynomial kernel on degenerate graphs for c = 1, our result provides a dichotomy about the existence of polynomial kernels for Dominating Set on degenerate graphs with this parameter.

Treedepth-d modulator as a parameter Somnath Sikdar The recent kernelization algorithms in very general sparse graph classes such as graphs of bounded expansion use the structural parameter of a constant-treedepth modulator [1]. The parameter seems natural in these graph classes, but we have not yet investigated its full power also in general graphs. What natural problems admit a polynomial ker...
متن کاملKernelization Using Structural Parameters on Sparse Graph Classes
Meta-theorems for polynomial (linear) kernels have been the subject of intensive research in parameterized complexity. Heretofore, there were meta-theorems for linear kernels on graphs of bounded genus, H-minor-free graphs, and H-topological-minor-free graphs. To the best of our knowledge, there are no known meta-theorems for kernels for any of the larger sparse graph classes: graphs of bounded...
متن کاملIncompressibility through Colors and IDs
In parameterized complexity each problem instance comes with a parameter k, and a parameterized problem is said to admit a polynomial kernel if there are polynomial time preprocessing rules that reduce the input instance to an instance with size polynomial in k. Many problems have been shown to admit polynomial kernels, but it is only recently that a framework for showing the non-existence of p...
متن کاملA Polynomial Excluded-Minor Approximation of Treedepth
Treedepth is a well-studied graph invariant in the family of “width measures” that includes treewidth and pathwidth. Understanding these invariants in terms of excluded minors has been an active area of research. The recent Grid Minor Theorem of Chekuri and Chuzhoy [12] establishes that treewidth is polynomially approximated by the largest k×k grid minor. In this paper, we give a similar polyno...
متن کاملTreedepth Bounds in Linear Colorings
Low-treedepth colorings are an important tool for algorithms that exploit structure in classes of bounded expansion; they guarantee subgraphs that use few colors are guaranteed to have bounded treedepth. These colorings have an implicit tradeoff between the total number of colors used and the treedepth bound, and prior empirical work suggests that the former dominates the run time of existing a...
